| **Good afternoon.** On Tuesday, Intel started its much anticipated new chapter when Lip-Bu Tan took the reins as chief executive.

Industry analysts are optimistic about Tan's tenure; he is widely seen as one of the few people who can turn Intel into a reliable, world-class chipmaker — which the U.S. desperately wants. But Tan's background makes him a surprising savior for America's chip champion.

As Noah Berman and Eliot Chen report this week, Tan is a longtime and prolific investor in China's chip industry, overseeing some 140 investments in Chinese chip companies since 1987.

Read more about his connections to U.S.-sanctioned companies like SMIC and Shanghai Biren — and why many analysts still say he's the right man for Intel.
