| Good morning. Has there been a vibe shift on China in Washington DC? Donald Trump's first term in office ushered in a new era of bi-partisan agreement that China is not just the country's top economic rival but a major strategic threat too.

Yet amid the flurry of activity during the first few week's of Trump's second term, there has been relatively little focus on measures that deal with China. Even the tariff hike on Chinese imports that Trump has imposed is lower than he proposed during the election campaign. Meanwhile many of the most hawkish voices in U.S. politics — both within the administration and in Congress — have to date been muted.

In this week's News Analysis, Noah Berman reports on the as-yet unspoken nervousness within the Republican foreign policy establishment about where Trump's China policy is headed, and asks whether there is a broader change in mood taking place towards the U.S.'s biggest rival.
